Can you transcribe phone calls on iPhone? The honest answer

This is one of the most misunderstood corners of iPhone transcription, so here is exactly what works. AI Transcribe is our app.

Short answer

In the US, yes, through Apple's own call recording in the Phone app. Both people hear an announcement, and the recording lands in the Notes app with a transcript in supported languages (English included). AI Transcribe cannot record an iPhone phone call directly. Other apps may record through a conference-call service or another workaround; check how they handle the audio and consent. If you only want to read along during a call, Apple's Live Captions shows the words in real time. And if you take calls on your Mac over Zoom, Meet, Teams or FaceTime, AI Transcribe for Mac can record and transcribe both sides.

What works: Apple's built-in call recording

  1. Make or take a call in the Phone app.
  2. Tap the button for more options, then tap Call Recording. Recording works when you are talking to one other person.
  3. Both participants hear an audio notice that the call is being recorded. This is by design.
  4. To stop, tap the stop button or hang up. The recording is saved to a Call Recordings folder in the Notes app.

In Notes, the transcript shows who said each line, and you can search it, copy it, or save the audio as a file. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro and later), you can also read a summary of the call.

Limits worth knowing (per Apple, as of October 2026):

  • Region: call recording is not available in the European Union, Turkey, Russia and several countries in the Middle East and Africa. It works in the US.
  • Transcript languages: call transcripts cover English (US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand, Singapore), Spanish (US and Mexico), Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. Calls in other languages are recorded but not transcribed.
  • What you get: a transcript and, on Apple Intelligence iPhones, a summary. There are no action items by owner, no follow-up email, and no translation into other languages.

Read a call live without recording it: Live Captions

Apple's Live Captions (Settings > Accessibility > Live Captions, iPhone 11 or later) transcribes audio on your iPhone in real time, including phone and FaceTime calls. If you set Keep Call Captions to 1 Minute, call captions are cleared when the call ends, and you cannot copy them. If you set it to 1 Hour, you can copy them for up to an hour after the call, and everyone on the call hears "This call is being transcribed." Live Captions supports a shorter list of languages than call recording (US English included) and is useful for following a call, not for keeping a record of it.

What doesn't work: third-party call recording

iOS sandboxing means no App Store app can tap into an active call's audio. Apps that advertise call recording use workarounds, usually a three-way "merge call" with a recording service, which routes your conversation through a third party's servers. The audio quality and legal exposure are yours. AI Transcribe does not record phone calls on iPhone.

Where AI Transcribe fits

Calls on your Mac. If the conversation does not have to be a cellular call, take it on your Mac. AI Transcribe for Mac records the audio the Mac plays together with your microphone, so both sides of a Zoom, Meet or Teams call are captured with no bot joining. Recordings you already have. Save the audio of an Apple call recording from Notes, or bring in a file from a conference line or another device, and import it (audio or video up to 3 hours). This is where you get more than a raw transcript:

  1. A transcript with speaker labels and timestamps, in 32 languages with automatic detection. Speaker labels can be wrong on difficult audio.

This is not legal advice. Apple's announcement tells the other person, but it does not replace knowing the rule that applies to you. When in doubt, ask everyone on the call first. Frequently asked questions

Why don't I see Call Recording in the Phone app? It may not be available in your country or region, or your call has more than two people. Check Settings > Apps > Phone > Audio Call Recording to make sure it is on.

Can I transcribe a call without recording it? Yes. Live Captions can show a call as it happens. With Keep Call Captions set to 1 Hour, you can copy the captions for up to an hour after the call; everyone hears a transcription announcement. For a saved audio record and a transcript in Notes, use Call Recording.

Can I transcribe old call recordings from another phone or app? Yes. Move the audio file to your iPhone or Mac and import it like any recording.
