How to transcribe WhatsApp voice messages on iPhone

Last updated:

You received a long WhatsApp voice message and you'd rather read it — or you need the text somewhere else, like an email or notes. There are two practical routes on iPhone.

Short answer: For a quick read inside the chat, enable WhatsApp's built-in transcripts (Settings → Chats → Voice Message Transcripts). To get the text out of WhatsApp — export it, translate it, or summarize a long message — save the audio and import it into a transcription app such as AI Transcribe.

Option 1 — WhatsApp's built-in transcript

Recent versions of WhatsApp can transcribe voice messages on your device:

  1. Open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats and turn on Voice Message Transcripts, choosing a transcript language.
  2. Long-press a voice message and tap Transcribe.

Limitations: transcripts support a limited set of languages, the language is fixed in settings (awkward when your contacts voice-note you in more than one language), and the text lives inside the chat — there is no export, summary, or translation.

Option 2 — Transcribe the audio with an app

For long voice notes, other languages, or when you need the text elsewhere:

  1. In WhatsApp, long-press the voice message, tap Forward → Share (the share icon), and either share directly to AI Transcribe or use Save to Files.
  2. Open AI Transcribe and tap Import, then pick the saved audio (WhatsApp voice notes are .opus files — the app converts any common format automatically).
  3. The transcript appears with timestamps. AI Transcribe detects the language automatically among 32 supported languages — useful when voice notes arrive in mixed languages.
  4. From there, tap Summarize for the gist of a 10-minute monologue, Translate to read it in your language, or export the text with the share sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transcribe a voice note someone forwarded from another chat? Yes — forwarded voice messages are ordinary audio. Share or save them the same way.

Are WhatsApp voice notes too low-quality for transcription? No. Voice notes are recorded close to the microphone, which is actually ideal. Accuracy problems come from background noise, not from WhatsApp's compression.

Can I transcribe WhatsApp voice messages in Portuguese, German or Cantonese? Yes — AI Transcribe supports 32 transcription languages with automatic detection, and can translate the transcript afterwards.

Is there a length limit? Imported audio files up to 3 hours are supported — far beyond any WhatsApp voice note.
