AI Transcribe vs Apple Voice Memos transcription: when is built-in enough?

Last updated:

Since iOS 18, Voice Memos transcribes new recordings for free. That genuinely covers some people’s entire need — so before paying for anything, know exactly where the built-in option ends.

TL;DR: Use Apple’s built-in transcript if you record occasional short memos in a supported language on an iPhone 12 or later. Use a dedicated app when you need file imports, older recordings, summaries, exports, speaker labels, or any of the 20+ languages Apple doesn’t cover.

Where the built-in transcript genuinely wins

It’s free, zero-setup, private to the Voice Memos app, and good for a quick “what did I say in that memo” check. If that sentence describes your usage, stop here — you don’t need to pay anyone.

Where it stops

  • Language list: about 10 languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Chinese). Turkish, Hindi, Russian, Polish, Dutch and many others aren’t supported.
  • Hardware/region gates: iPhone 12 or later, and not available in every region.
  • Only new Voice Memos recordings — no imports, no WhatsApp audio, no videos, and older memos usually have no transcript.
  • Text only — no summary, no speaker labels, no structured export.

Frequently asked questions

Can Voice Memos transcribe a file someone sent me? No — it only transcribes recordings made in Voice Memos itself. Import-based transcription needs an app; see how to transcribe a voice memo.

Is the built-in transcript accurate? For clear, close-mic memos in supported languages, yes — comparable to dedicated apps. The gap is features, not raw accuracy.

Can I get summaries from Voice Memos transcripts? Not in Voice Memos. Copy the text elsewhere manually, or transcribe in an app with AI tools built in.
