Otter joins meetings (Zoom, Meet, Teams), transcribes in real time and identifies speakers. It also has a Mac and Windows desktop app that can record meetings without the bot. It is built around team collaboration and meeting workflows rather than personal recordings, and works best with its web app alongside iOS.

Note the free plan's file-import cap: as of October 2026, free accounts get 300 transcription minutes per month (30 minutes max per conversation) but only 3 audio/video file imports total, per account lifetime, not per month. If your use case is transcribing existing recordings rather than live meetings, the free tier effectively can't do it.

3. TurboScribe: best for bulk file transcription

TurboScribe focuses on transcribing uploaded files with Whisper-class accuracy. It runs in the browser on iPhone (there is no native app from TurboScribe itself), and it can record from the microphone in the browser and transcribe afterwards.

4. Apple Voice Memos: best free built-in option

Since iOS 18, Apple's own Voice Memos app can transcribe recordings for free, including older ones when you open them, and supported Macs can do the same. Per Apple, transcription requires an iPhone 12 or later and covers 10 languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese, not Turkish, Arabic, Hindi and many others), and isn't available in all regions. Voice Memos has no file imports or meeting tools of its own; on iPhones that support Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro and later) you can summarize a transcript with Writing Tools. For occasional quick memos it may be all you need.

5. Whisper Memos: best for memo-to-email and Apple Watch workflows

Whisper Memos records up to 90 minutes, imports audio files and writes AI summaries, and emails you the result. Its clearest strengths are the standalone Apple Watch app and the email and Shortcuts workflows. You can try it on a handful of recordings, then it needs a subscription: $69.99 a year (about $5.83/month) or $9.99 billed monthly, as of October 2026.
