How to transcribe a voicemail on iPhone

Last updated:

Voicemail is the audio nobody wants to listen to. iPhones already transcribe a lot of it — and for the rest, the audio file route works.

Short answer: iPhones show voicemail transcripts natively: visual voicemail transcription in the Phone app (select languages and regions, carrier-dependent), and Live Voicemail transcribing in real time as someone leaves a message (iOS 17+, where available). For voicemails those don't cover — other languages, files exported from an office phone system, messages forwarded as audio — import the file into a transcription app like AI Transcribe.

Route 1 — The built-in transcripts

  • Visual voicemail: open Phone → Voicemail; supported messages show text under the audio. Coverage depends on language, region and carrier.
  • Live Voicemail (iOS 17+): the transcript appears live while the caller speaks, so you can pick up mid-message. Same caveat: supported languages and regions.

Limits: transcripts are plain text in the Phone app — no export tooling, no summaries, and quality on non-supported languages is a blank, not a transcript.

Route 2 — Transcribe the voicemail as a file

For everything else — office phone systems that email voicemails as attachments (often .amr, .wav or .mp3), forwarded voicemail audio, or languages the built-in doesn't cover:

  1. Save the voicemail audio to Files (from Mail, Messages or the voicemail share sheet).
  2. In AI Transcribe, tap Import → Audio File and pick it — AMR and every other common voicemail format converts automatically.
  3. The transcript arrives with timestamps; for a long rambling message, Summarize gets you the point in one tap. Voicemails in other languages transcribe (32 languages, auto-detected) and translate.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my voicemail have no transcript? Usually language or region support, or the carrier. The audio-file route works regardless.

Can I get voicemail transcripts in Turkish, Polish, Russian…? Not from the built-in transcription today — but saved voicemail audio imports and transcribes fine in any of the 32 supported languages.

Can I keep voicemail transcripts? Built-in transcripts live in the Phone app. Transcribing the saved file gives you exportable text and PDF — useful when a voicemail matters professionally.
