How to transcribe a voicemail on iPhone

Voicemail is the audio nobody wants to listen to. iPhones already transcribe a lot of it — and for the rest, the audio file route works.

Short answer: iPhones show voicemail transcripts natively: visual voicemail transcription in the Phone app (select languages and regions, carrier-dependent), and Live Voicemail transcribing in real time as someone leaves a message (iOS 17+, where available). For voicemails those don't cover — other languages, files exported from an office phone system, messages forwarded as audio — import the file into a transcription app like AI Transcribe.

Route 1 — The built-in transcripts

Visual voicemail: open Phone → Voicemail; supported messages show text under the audio. Coverage depends on language, region and carrier.

Save the voicemail audio to Files (from Mail, Messages or the voicemail share sheet).
