How to record and transcribe lectures on iPhone (student guide)
Record lectures on iPhone or Mac and turn them into transcripts, summaries and study questions, plus what to check before you record.

Short answer
Record the lecture with your iPhone near the front of the room (or import an existing recording), transcribe it with AI Transcribe, then use the AI tools to generate a summary, key ideas and practice questions. Record online lectures directly on your Mac. Processing can be faster than the recording itself, but how long you wait depends mostly on upload, file size and how busy the service is; we have not measured a typical time.
Ask before you record. Rules differ by country and by university. Many universities set a recording policy or leave it to each lecturer, and the lecture itself may be protected by copyright. Ask your lecturer, keep the recording for your own study and do not share it. If you need recordings as a disability accommodation, your university's disability or accessibility services office is the right place to arrange it. This is not legal advice.
Step 1: Record (or collect) the audio
- In the lecture hall: sit close to the speaker and place the phone on the desk with the microphone unobstructed. In AI Transcribe, use the Record tab; a recording runs up to 2 hours. For all-day seminars, record in blocks.
- Online lecture: the Mac app records what the Mac plays together with your microphone, so a lecture over Zoom, Teams or Meet lands in the transcript without a bot joining. When Zoom, Teams or Meet starts a call, the app offers to record it.
- Already have the file? Lecture capture downloads, Voice Memos, a classmate's recording: import audio or video files up to 3 hours long. For video, the audio track is used automatically.
Step 2: Transcribe
Tap Import (or stop the recording) and the transcript is made in the cloud with timestamps and speaker labels, so you can jump to the minute a concept was explained and see where a question came from the audience. Transcription supports 32 languages with automatic detection, so lectures in Spanish, German or French work the same way. With poor sound in a large hall, speaker labels can be wrong.
Step 3: Turn the transcript into study material
This is where a transcript beats re-listening. The transcript has 20+ AI tools, for example:
- Summarize: a readable overview of the whole lecture.
- Highlight key ideas: the concepts likely to appear in the exam.
- Prepare questions: practice questions from the lecture content.
- Create a todo list: assignments and deadlines the lecturer mentioned.
- Extract dates: exam dates, submission deadlines, reading weeks.
- Translate: the transcript into any of 46 languages, useful for lectures in a language you are still learning.

Read it on any device
Sign in with the same email on iPhone (Settings > Sign in to sync and share) and on the Mac (Settings > Account). Recordings, transcripts and results then sync between them, and the web library lets you read everything in a browser, for example on a library computer. Signing in is free and optional.
What about the built-in Voice Memos transcript?
From iOS 18, Voice Memos transcribes recordings on an iPhone 12 or later for free, in 10 languages; older recordings are transcribed when you open them. That is fine for short memos. For lectures you miss speaker labels, file import and practice questions, and summaries only come through Writing Tools on Apple Intelligence iPhones (iPhone 15 Pro and later). Frequently asked questions
How accurate is it in a big lecture hall? Distance to the speaker is the main factor. Front rows work well; the back of a 300-seat hall with a weak PA does not. If the university records the lecture too, importing that file beats your own recording.
Can I transcribe a 3-hour recorded seminar? Yes, imported files up to 3 hours are supported.
