This page is published by the makers of AI Transcribe, which is one of the tools compared below. Nothing here comes from a controlled accuracy test, because we have not run one and would not trust our own if we had. What it does contain is what each tool is for, what it costs, and where it runs, checked against the makers' own pages on 30 September 2026.
The distinction that matters most: transcription turns a recording you already have into text. Apple's Dictation types what you say as you say it. They are different jobs, and the difference is worth understanding before paying for anything.

What is already on your Mac
Voice Memos records from the microphone, and on recent versions it can also show a transcript of what it recorded. That is worth trying before installing anything, because for a single spoken note it may be the whole answer. Availability depends on your macOS version, your hardware and the language, so check rather than assume.
Dictation is under System Settings, then Keyboard. It types live and cannot open a file, so it does not compete with anything else on this page.
Neither records the sound your Mac is playing. Recording audio on a Mac covers why that is a separate problem.
MacWhisper
Made by Jordi Bruin and Good Snooze in the Netherlands, and the reference point in this category. It runs Whisper models on your own Mac, so with a local model selected the audio stays on the machine. The Pro licence is €64 paid once rather than a subscription, and adds batch transcription, speaker recognition and meeting recording across Zoom, Teams and others.
It also offers cloud transcription and cloud AI features if you choose them, so "nothing leaves your Mac" describes how you can run it rather than how it always runs.
Worth considering if local processing or a one-time purchase matters most to you. Two things to check before buying: local transcription uses your own hardware, so an older Mac is slower on long files, and the App Store version is the same product under the name Whisper Transcription, which is useful if you prefer buying through Apple.
AI Transcribe
Ours. Cloud transcription across 32 languages with automatic detection, speakers separated on every recording, and around twenty tools that run on the finished transcript to produce meeting notes, action items or summaries. On the Mac it records your microphone and the sound the Mac is playing at the same time, on separate channels, which is the shape of a recorded call.
Worth considering if you want the recording and the work afterwards in one place, or you need the same app on an iPhone as well as a Mac.
Not for you if you need transcription without uploading audio, or you would rather pay once. Both of those point at MacWhisper, and we would rather say so than have you find out after subscribing.
One thing to know: recordings live on the device that made them. There is no sync between the iPhone app and the Mac app.
Web tools
Rev, Otter, Notta, TurboScribe and others run in a browser and do not care which computer you use. Several can record a meeting through the browser as well. They suit a one-off file on a machine where you cannot install software, and teams that want a shared workspace. They tend to be the most expensive route for a lot of audio, and free tiers are small.
Choosing
- One file, nothing installed: a web tool.
- Audio must not be uploaded: MacWhisper with a local model.
- Pay once rather than monthly: MacWhisper Pro.
- Type by talking: Apple Dictation, already there.
- A quick spoken note: try Voice Memos first.
- Recording calls, then notes from the transcript: AI Transcribe.
Common questions
Is local transcription as accurate as cloud? It depends on the model, the hardware and the recording, and both approaches now use strong models. We have not tested this fairly and will not claim a winner.
Does any of this work offline? Local tools can. Cloud tools cannot, ours included.
